Dr. Flynn practices general surgical oncology, treating patients with many different types of cancer, including cancers of the skin, breast and abdomen. Over the years, he has developed specialized expertise treating advanced abdominal cancers that have spread to the lining of the abdomen—a condition known as peritoneal carcinomatosis. He is a pioneer in using the treatment known as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Using this technique, Dr. Flynn removes tumors from the abdomen and directly applies the heated chemotherapy treatment during surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells. Before joining Sentara, Dr. Flynn launched the HIPEC program at a major cancer treatment center in Philadelphia. "People traveled all over the country to come to our center. That experience gave me the passion to impart what I learned to other cancer programs," he explains. "I wanted to take that knowledge to a community hospital setting to care for patients in their local community."
